I sometimes hear from people who are trying to make sure that the Medifast diet is as convenient as it looks. One big draw to this diet is that you do not have to do a lot of preparation and cooking. So people want to make sure that they can take little liberties to make the small amount of prep work that is necessary as convenient as it can possibly be.
I recently heard from someone who said: “is it possible to make your Medifast meals ahead of time, especially your lean and green meal? I don’t have a lot of time during the day to prepare meals, especially at my job. But if I could make many of my meals in the morning or even the night before, that would be much better. And if I could pre-make the lean and green meals, preferably in a crock pot, this would help me a lot. Is this even allowed?”
This would-be dieter was happy to know that you absolutely can make the Medifast meals ahead of time – although many of them don’t require any preparation at all. For example, you don’t need to do anything to the bars, ready to drink shakes, and chips. I do make a lot of my meals ahead of time. I’m not really a morning person, so I don’t want to face the day worrying about assembling everything. You can very easily make the eggs, brownies, pancakes, pudding, fruit drinks, and soft serve ice cream ahead of time. You can just put them in Tupperware so that they will stay fresh. You can also make the soup and chili ahead of time and put it in a thermos. Sometimes I will do this. But, since you really only need hot water for the soups and chili, sometimes I will just use hot water from the water cooler at my job for those items.
As far as the lean and green meal, you can absolutely make it ahead of time if you want or need to. And you can most certainly use a crock pot or anything that will make this easier or more convenient. (I like a to use a small counter top convection oven for my lean and green meals because it very quickly drains fat from meats and grills veggies. You can cook all of your foods together in less than 15 minutes.
If it helps to think about it this way, the lean and green meal is really only 3 – 5 ounces of lean protein and three servings of vegetables. There are many meals that will meet this requirement. There is no requirement that the meal not be made ahead or even frozen. I know people who use carefully chosen frozen meals or even take out or restaurant meals as long as they are mindful of the ingredients and contents. Make this easy on yourself. The diet is designed to be flexible and convenient. If making the foods ahead of time helps you with this, it’s my opinion that you should feel free to do so.
